This route is a combination of rides we’ve done across the wonderful state of Oregon. It starts at the Alvord Desert Hot Springs and heads up the eastern side of the Steen's. It goes on to connect to Malheur and Ochoco National Forests and up to the South Fork of the John Day River. From Dayville, you'll find John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and the Painted Hills. Next, its ribbons of dirt winding through Oregon sage brush desert. The route then drops into the Deschutes River area to ride a little (10-15mi) single track, before climbing up the east side of Mt. Hood to Olallie Lake. The last section is mostly down along the Clackamas River with around a 5000 ft ascent into Portland.
One day, I would like to ride this from Portland to the Alvord Desert, continuing west to Klamath Falls and finishing the loop with The Oregon Outback.
3 hot spring stops (Alvord, Crystal Crane, and Austin), The John Day Fossil Beds, Painted Hills, Ollalie Lake, 3 national forests (Ochoco, Malheur, and Mt. Hood), AND 4 of our largest Rivers (John Day, Deschutes, Clackamas and Willamette).
Crossing the Warm Springs Reservation up to Ollalie lake requires a permit. This can be purchased in Warm Springs at the market. This route will go long stretches without reliable water supply, plan accordingly.
Some single track, lots of dirt and some wonderful pavement.
